Course Description

This course explores the theory and practice of diplomacy through the framework of the United Nations. Students examine the UN’s history, principal organs, and role in peacekeeping, human rights, development, and global governance. Combining international relations theory with case studies and simulations (including a Model United Nations simulation), the course emphasizes how states, diplomats, and non-state actors navigate power and procedure. The course includes visits to UN organizations in Geneva and trips to Strasbourg and Paris.

Course Rationale

This course offers students a unique opportunity to explore how diplomacy works in theory and practice through the lens of the United Nations. Students will gain a deep understanding of international relations, global governance, and multilateral negotiation while developing practical skills in analysis, policy writing, and diplomatic simulation. The course allows students to see these concepts in action, visiting UN agencies, international organizations, and cultural sites, providing firsthand exposure to the people, processes, and institutions that shape world affairs.

Coursework

Much of the course would focus on traditional assignments (readings, class discussions, writing assignments, etc). But this unique course would also incorporate a Model United Nations (MUN) major project whereby students would be assigned a country and would participate in a multi-day MUN Conference as an ending project to the course.
